Discover the Rare 1888 Morgan Silver Dollar

Two rare 1888 silver dollars are pictured on the right and in today's market each is worth well over $100. Significant is that each is also distinctly different in appearance.

Easily noticed, one has the 'look' most would agree is desirable and valuable. The other dollar is appreciated as a collectible because of a scarce mintmark. Your 1888 silver dollar needs the attention necessary to properly distinguish and find its true value.

Viewing the bottom coin, it is similar to most worn and circulated silver dollars encountered. However once the 'S' mintmark is identified this coin is quickly recognized as something uncommon and scarce. With most dates and mints produced in the millions, the total number of San Francisco dollars dated 1888 was very low, (657,000) as reported by Whitman's Red Book. Low initial production, an even smaller amount surviving until today and the large number of silver dollar collectors all combine to keep the value high.

Stunning in appearance, pictured on the top is a 'condition rarity' 1888 Morgan dollar. Although there is a huge supply of silver dollars, any coin of this quality is scarce and in great demand by collectors and dealers. Carefully preserved and sheltered from the elements is a rare treatment for most coins, this example stands apart retaining its original untouched condition.

Your 1888 Morgan silver dollar value is determined by the above fascinating combination of factors. Collectors, with careful study have developed a sophisticated appreciation of a silver dollars' worth.

Details Raise 1888 Morgan Silver Dollar Value

Follow along with the images and descriptions as a Morgan dollar begins to wear from freshly minted 'Uncirculated' condition, to a very worn example in 'Good' condition. By judging the different stages of wear, a 'Grade' is determined. The greater the detail remaining, the greater your 1888 Morgan silver dollar value.

Uncirculated: To reach the coveted 'uncirculated' condition all original, as minted detail remains. None has been removed due to wear. OK are nicks and abrasions from contact with other coins, this is normal due to the minting and storage process of silver dollars. Confirming the uncirculated grade is mint luster remaining on the entire surface, including her chin, neck line and hair below and above the ear. These areas are the first to wear and exhibit a dull and smooth texture once in circulation.

Extremely Fine: Slight but obvious removal of design and metal defines a worn silver dollar in 'extremely fine' condition. Mint luster is now gone from the large exposed areas, specifically the field in front of Liberty and her face. Small details in her hair are now missing, most noticeable above her forehead and behind her neck. Also the folds in the cap show wear on the highest parts, the result of use and handling. This is a nice coin, with solid 1888 Morgan silver dollar value.

Fine: Circulation has now reduced most of the finer design details to the point of merging. Overall and clearly visible, moderate wear describes silver dollars in 'fine' condition. Liberty's hair both above and below the ear is noticeably worn with wide flat spots now replacing the original fine lines. Turning to the reverse, the leaves in the wreath are now very flat, most feathers in the eagle's neck have merged and the very tip of the wings lack any detail. Despite moderate wear 'fine' condition 1888-S dollars are scarce and worth over $115. See the section above and determine if your coin has the 'S' mintmark.

Good: An 1888 silver dollar in 'good' condition is distinctly 'flat' in appearance. The original separation of Liberty's hair and forehead has worn away. Her ear still shows, however hair above and behind the ear is smooth and connecting to her cheek. Liberty is visible in the head band but the once detailed cotton blossoms are now lost.
